Quickstart - connect Virgil in minutes

Virgil is one connector per app, with one record across Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok.

1. Claude

  1. Your name, bottom-left → Settings.
  2. Paste the blurb in "Instructions for Claude".
  3. Customize → Connectors → "Add" → "Add custom connector".
  4. Name: Virgil. Remote MCP server URL: https://mcp.virgilknows.com/mcp → Add.
  5. Virgil appears in your connectors list → Connect → Virgil's branded sign-in → enter your email and your code.
  6. Next chat: "+" bottom-left → Connectors → toggle Virgil on.

Claude keeps this across chats - one and done.

2. ChatGPT

  1. Plugins in the left sidebar → the "+" button, top right.
  2. "New Plugin" dialog - Name: Virgil. Connection: Server URL, https://mcp.virgilknows.com/mcp. Authentication: OAuth.
  3. Check "I understand and want to continue" → Create.
  4. "Sign in with Virgil" → Virgil's branded sign-in → enter your email and your code.
  5. Paste the blurb in Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions.
  6. Every new chat: type @Virgil at the start, then your question. Once per chat is enough. (Or "+" → Virgil - same thing.)

Your connection stays put between chats; ChatGPT just asks you to invoke Virgil once per new chat - type @Virgil at the start and he stays active for that conversation. The first message in a new ChatGPT chat takes a few seconds to connect.

3. Grok

  1. Go to grok.com/connectors.
  2. Click "New Connector", then select "Custom".
  3. Enter Virgil's address: https://mcp.virgilknows.com/mcp.
  4. Complete Virgil's branded sign-in with your email and your code.
  5. Grok discovers what Virgil can do and makes him available in your conversations.
  6. Paste the blurb where Grok keeps your custom instructions, if your plan carries that surface.

The day-one test

In one assistant, save one real fact with: Virgil, save this: ...

Then open another assistant connected to Virgil and ask, "What do you know about me?" Recall favors named subjects, so asking about a named person, company, or project is the most reliable way in.

If something fails

  • If Virgil is not in the connector list, check the per-app paths in troubleshooting.
  • If ChatGPT answered like it never met you, you probably did not invoke Virgil in that chat - type @Virgil, or see the ChatGPT note.
  • If recall comes back empty, use the recall checklist.
